The History of National Pancake Day
National Pancake Day is observed on different dates each year, but it typically falls on the first Tuesday in March. The day’s origins are tied to the tradition of Pancake Tuesday, or Shrove Tuesday, which marks the last day of feasting before the solemn season of Lent in the Christian liturgical calendar. Shrove Tuesday has been historically celebrated by consuming rich, indulgent foods like pancakes, which use up ingredients such as eggs, milk, and sugar—foods that were traditionally restricted during Lent.
While the tradition of Pancake Day dates back centuries, National Pancake Day as we know it in the U.S. was popularized by IHOP (International House of Pancakes). In 2006, IHOP launched National Pancake Day as a way to raise money for children’s hospitals across the country. Since then, the day has become a beloved celebration not only of pancakes but also of community and charity.
